Malware is a malicious software program that can be unwillingly installed on a digital device via emails or files which are downloaded from the Internet.
A virus is a form of malware that affects the performance of the device by slowing it down strikingly, or can delete the data stored on the device or make it unusable.
Ransomware is a specific form of malware that encrypts files and in so doing makes them inaccessible. The cybercriminals behind the ransomware then demand a ransom from the victim in exchange for access to the data to be restored. The costs can range from a few hundred of Euro to thousands and can be detrimental to a business.
Four key steps to protect your business from viruses and ransomware:
- Keep your operating system up-to-date;
- Don’t install software or give it administrative privileges unless you know exactly what it is and what it does;
- Back up your files frequently and automatically to a separate location;
- Install an anti-malware application and keep it regularly updated. Anti-malware applications prevent, detect, and remove computer malware by scanning files and applications and comparing them with known viruses. If a match is found then the file or application is considered a virus and is blocked or removed.
